Donate to the WVFD Coin Drop & Hurricane Irene Fund

Hurricane Irene struck the town of Wallingford and the surrounding area on Sunday, August 28, 2011. The Wallingford Volunteer Fire Department went into action and continued for over 24 hours straight. Many of their kitchen and fire house supplies were used up when they were donated to an evacuee shelter at the Rotary Building on Main Street. They are also in need of other supplies used up or damaged during the storm. If you'd like to help by making a donation simply click on the Donate button and make a donation using Pay Pal or credit card. Any amount is greatly appreciated.

The WVFD is also instituting an online COIN DROP this year. Donate here online by clicking the DONATE button or drop your coins off in the nearest WVFD COIN DROP box. You can also drop by the firehouse with a donation.

The WVFD uses the funds from their COIN DROP fundraiser to sponsor these annual and special events:

1. Sponsors 2 youngsters to the Kehoe conservation camps. Check it out at http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/edu_camps.cfm

2. Sponsors up to 4 youngsters to the Vermont Fire Academy Cadet program. Check it out at http://www.vtfirefighters.org/12.html This program builds structure in young adults that wish to someday pursue the fire service. It’s a summer program that is designed to put kids through some basic principles and training intended to get them ready for the fire service. Most youths that participate in these programs are cadet/junior firefighters. These young adults are the future of the fire service.

3. The WVFD also donates these funds for awareness programs for example the Stop Child Abuse Awareness program. Check it out at http://beth100.hubpages.com/hub/Blue-Ribbon-Against-Child-Abuse The blue pin wheels that passer’s by sees at the fire station symbolizes the fire departments support to this cause.

4. These funds are also used to offset budget short falls during the year for certain equipment and needed fire training programs. For example we will have a 600.00+ training budget discrepancy for 2011 passed on from the 2010 budget. Due to training going up 100 percent, 50 bucks for a two day class, to 100 to 120 for classes now. We have had a short fall for 2010. The funds from this coin drop would be used to send your firefighters to needed annual training.

5. The WVFD has also assisted people in need in the past. For example a while ago a local young man was involved in a motorcycle accident that claimed both of this young man’s legs. The WVFD voted to use $1,200.00 of these funds gained from coin drops to assist his family in making his home handicap accessible.

These are ONLY SOME of the things the WVFD does with the funds gained from their annual coin drop. In the past the coin drop was done on the street. It’s an anticipated $2,500.00 to $3,000.00 gain for the WVFD and 85 percent of these donations came from out of state motorists and NOT FROM WALLINGFORD TAX PAYERS. This year the Wallingford town select board voted against allowing this fundraiser to take place on the road. Please help the WVFD meet their goal by contributing today online, at the fire house or drop your change in the nearest coin drop box in town.

Contributions can also be sent directly to the WVFD. Make checks payable to WVFD and send to: Wallingford Volunteer Fire Department P.O. Box 280, Wallingford, VT 05773

Project Teddy Bear

Project Teddy Bear
WVFD Chief Jeff holds 2 donated teddy bears

Many times our Wallingford volunteer fire fighters are called to a house fire or the scene of a motor vehicle accident. Fortunately, many times there are only minor damages and minor injuries but the trauma of such events can be extremely stressful to those involved, especially to a child. What better way to comfort a child during these times than with their very own huggable new friend...a soft teddy bear given by a concerned firefighter.

The Wallingford Volunteer Fire Department is presently in search of some assistance to help with their Project Teddy Bear. This project is being developed to acquire approximately 6-12 plush, 14"-16" (inch) high teddy bears to be kept at the ready in the WVFD's fire trucks. These teddy bears will bring much needed comfort to a child at a time when their world seems uncertain and confusing. A cuddly teddy bear can be familiar, friendly and lovable.

The WVFD welcomes any ongoing donations of teddy bears or funding to purchase them. Teddy bears need only be simple, non-jointed, plush and have an appealing facial expression. Teddy bears can have clothing with the logo of the contributing organization printed or embroidered on it. Please consider that some bears will be given to young children so they should have embroidered snouts and non-removable eyes.

Any and all monetary contributions to the WVFD's Project Teddy Bear are greatly appreciated. Contributions can be made by check or money order made payable to WVFD and mailed to WVFD, P.O. Box 280, Wallingford, VT 05773; or send a donation online via PayPal to wvfd3300@yahoo.com (please note your contribution is for Project Teddy Bear); or make a contribution directly to the WVFD by clicking on the Donate button below.
